With humans and chimpanzees sharing at least 98% of their DNA in common, Is a Chimpanzee/Human Hybrid possible?

Horses and Donkeys have interbred to create Mules, and in zoos, Lions and Tigers have interbred to create "Ligers". One wonders whether or not some unethical scientist has not already done so with Great Apes and Humans.|||No, not without advanced genetic engineering (and this will not be attempted because of universally accepted ethical restrictions). Despite the similarity in genetic material, we do not have the same complement of chromosomes and therefore we cannot create a successfully fertilized zygote.|||%26gt; Is a Chimpanzee/Human Hybrid possible?

That's a big fat "We Don't Know." Some experimentation was done, but it was so limited that I would call it inconclusive -- it just might be that we have reduced interfertility with the other great apes beyond what would have produced a pregnancy in the limited trials.|||No, the 2% difference is enough to not allow a viable organism. It was attempted in the USSR in the 1920s
