How well can a chimpanzee Communicate with a person using sign language compared to how a deaf person?

There is an excellent new book on the evolution of language called "Adam's Tongue" by Derek Bickerton which discusses sign langage use in chimpanzees. It is well worth reading. Bickerton writes very well and is easy to understand.
